Villas Belle Epoque
The villas in the seaside district bear witness to the charm of the Belle Epoque. With the discovery of sea bathing and its therapeutic benefits, Mers experienced a spectacular development. At the end of the 19th century, the railway brought the first vacationers called "bathers" to our coast. These, from the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie of the time, were going to settle there by building the first second homes of our modern world. Thalassotherapy had just been born. The style of the villas (Anglo-Norman, Flemish, Picard, Moorish, Renaissance, Louis XIII, Napoleon III, 1930s, ...), ... a "unique jewel of architecture".
Beautiful walk along the General Leclerc Esplanade (800m) where villas in the protected area display bow-windiws, ornate balconies, colorful facades, ceramics which bear witness to the charm of the Belle Epoque.
